Soapstone stoves in Valais

Custom-made Brazilian soapstone stoves.

Our Brazilian soapstone stoves are custom-built around a high-efficiency cast-iron firebox and release radiant heat for up to 12 hours. They can be personalised with a sculpture, a date and other details. Their appearance draws on traditional Valais ‘bagnard’ stoves, with mouldings, stepped courses and bush-hammered surfaces.

Valais heritage and contemporary requirements

In the Alps, soapstone has long enjoyed an exceptional reputation. Used since the Iron Age, this remarkable stone was already being shaped into cooking vessels thanks to its high resistance to heat and its exceptional ability to store it.

Over the centuries, people in Alpine regions developed genuine expertise around this stone. They learned to heat substantial masses of soapstone so they could benefit for many hours from the gentle, even warmth it releases.

In Valais, old stoves dating from the 16th century can still be admired. The first masonry heat-storage stoves probably appeared much earlier, although the oldest physical examples to have survived date from that period.

This Valais heritage deserves to be preserved and passed on. We do everything possible to restore and rehabilitate these historic stoves while adapting them to today’s technical requirements and standards, giving them a new life at the heart of contemporary homes.
