Insert and closed firebox: new life for an open fireplace

A beautiful open fireplace is appealing, but it is poor at heating a room: a large share of the heat escapes through the chimney flue. Fitting an insert or installing a closed firebox allows you to preserve the charm of the fire while turning the fireplace into a genuine source of heat. Here is how it works.

Why an open fireplace provides so little heat

In an open fireplace, warm air goes straight up the flue and a large share of the energy contained in the wood is lost. Efficiency remains very low, while log consumption is high. There is also the risk of flying sparks and the difficulty of controlling combustion.

The insert: renovate without major demolition

A built-in insert is fitted into the existing opening of your fireplace. By enclosing the fire behind glass, it controls combustion and distributes heat much more efficiently, often by convection into the room.

It is the ideal solution for modernising a fireplace without undertaking major building work: the existing surround is retained, while efficiency, safety and ease of use are significantly improved.

The closed firebox: a bespoke solution

For a new build or a complete renovation, a closed firebox is integrated into a bespoke surround. Modern models feature very clean lines, large glass panels and excellent efficiency, with both single-sided and double-sided versions available.

Some appliances also operate with heat-storage technology, continuing to release heat long after the fire has gone out for lasting, consistent comfort.

What you gain

Less wood consumption for more heat, clean and controlled combustion, increased safety thanks to the glass, and the continued pleasure of watching the flames. The fireplace is transformed from a decorative feature into a fully fledged heating appliance.

Take the next step

The right model depends on the dimensions of your existing fireplace opening, your chimney flue and your expectations. We assess your existing fireplace and recommend the most suitable solution, with careful installation throughout Valais and the Chablais. Make an appointment to discuss your project.
